Great Expectations
Charles Dickens, 1861
Pip, an orphan boy raised by his sharp-tempered sister and her kind blacksmith husband in the Kentish marshes, has a frightening encounter with an escaped convict one Christmas Eve. Soon afterwards he is sent to play at the gloomy house of the strange Miss Havisham, where he falls for the proud girl Estella and begins to feel ashamed of his common life. When a mysterious fortune lifts him toward becoming a London gentleman, Pip must learn what money, loyalty and real worth have to do with one another.
