Hometown

Hyun Jin-geon, 1926 · Original title: 고향

On a train from Daegu to Seoul, the narrator finds himself facing a man dressed in a Japanese kimono, a Korean cotton jacket and Chinese-style trousers all at once. After chattering at a Japanese and a Chinese passenger in turn, the man starts talking to the narrator in a thick Gyeongsang dialect. The narrator finds him tiresome at first, but slowly begins to listen when the man says he is on his way back from his hometown.
